(It doesn't add up because someone I messaged told a friend, and as a vocal Tibetian sympathizer, she started freaking out she'd get deported too.)

Memorable quotes:
I do not believe youuuuu
What? are you serious?
You can't be fucking serious
What the fuck. What the fuck.

I'm so sorry.

For the folks who didn't get the message, and thus don't understand this post, I should explain.

As an April fools prank I told everyone I could, including my Chinese friends, that I just got back from the Securities Bureau and that my visa was being reduced to a week because of stuff I posted on my blog. Essentially, I was getting kicked out of the country.

I thought it would be a good teaching point for all my American friends, a springboard to explain that their perception of the governement and it's willingness to supress free speech is unrealistic. Gmen don't kick down doors and disappear people. Anymore.

In reality, I told them, no foreign bloger has ever been ejected from the country, to my knowledge. A few Chinese bloggers have been house arrested or warned, but they usually go much further than just posting their experiences and take an active role in organizing groups to undermine the government.

Common sense prevails in China, not ideological concepts of oppression, freedom, or whatever. The government isn't going to bother you if you don't cause it problems. An English language blog doesn't cause problems for the government, therefore I'm fine.
